LIEN FOUNDATION
“Forget Us Not - Building a Dementia-Friendly Community”

THE CHALLENGE
In many Singaporean families, dementia is seen to be a natural part of ageing – it is not. Not only does the disease affect individuals, families and caregivers have to contend with the public stigma associated with it. Often, persons with dementia (PWD) go missing or act out in irrational ways in public, causing their families to lock them up at home to 'save face.' PWD then become prisoners in their own home; their independence and dignity taken away from them. No initiatives were implemented even at a community level with few educational resources for communities and corporate businesses available. An urgent need for Singapore to become a kinder, educated and more dementia-friendly community was due.

THE APPROACH
Based on the fundamental knowledge that regardless of being a caregiver, community stakeholder, volunteer or someone who has no idea what dementia is, he or she will have personal emotions and experiences linked to the disease. Through this, we looked to engage the public at the emotional level, triggering their personal story through our campaign storytelling. We showed that everyone has a part to play in building a Dementia-Friendly Community (DFC), and we pioneered one in Yishun with our co-initators, setting an example for other towns in Singapore to follow suit, should the opportunity arise.

THE RESULTS
From Shinmin Daily News, to Channel News Asia reports, more than a dozen mainstream news articles or features were about Forget Us Not. TV shows such as "Hello Singapore" and "Talking Point" invited representatives from our initiators to discuss about dementia issues. Our website was prominently featured in "Hello Singapore". The first Forget Us Not getai show saw 2,500 attendees thronging the event, exceeding our expectations.

More importantly, the campaign caught the attention of the Government resulting in a concerted effort to take the initiative nationwide. Hong Kah North became the next DFC, with Bedok, MacPherson and Queenstown to follow suit. This was the start of positive change for persons with dementia and their caregivers.

CLIENTS’ WORDS

Mandate is an agency with heart and guts. They’ve been our creative partner on 3 projects: Obitcheery (a re-imagination of the morbidly formal obituary), Die Die Must Say (a grassroots campaign that featured a getai series with colourful discussions about end-of-life issues), and Forget Us Not (a training and advocacy effort to support the creation of Singapore’s first Dementia-Friendly Community). The team went the extra mile for us every time, and succeeded in creating and executing projects that resonated with not just the man in the street, but also big businesses and government bodies. We are looking for a 4th adventure together.
